Ottawa Times: LETTER: Grandchildren deserve an optimistic future

Letter to the Editor by Susan Wynn Bence of Watseka, IL

To the editor:

Last week, my husband and I were blessed to welcome a new grandson into our family. His name is Elliott, he is our second grandchild. Our 6-year-old granddaughter Scarlett is thrilled to be a big sister! She is over the moon with excitement and so are we. Like most parents and grandparents, we want our children and grandchildren to have better lives while we enjoy the benefits of being born in the land of opportunity, America!

I was born and raise in the “Buckle of the Corn Belt” on a small farmstead in rural Iroquois County, Illinois. I am proud of my roots, my heritage, and my family. I am grateful to have been reared by hardworking, straightforward, blue collar parents and grandparents right here in Illinois. It saddens me to read and hear all of the negativity about our local, state and federal leaders.

Even with all of the political noise today, I still remain optimistic. Like any grandmother, I want to be sure that I’m taking steps to leave the next few generations with a better world of opportunity. Consequently, I keep up with local, state, and national news, am civically engaged, I volunteer, and I love my community, my state and my country.

As the former president of the Illinois Federation of Republican Women and current vice president of the Board of Governors for the Illinois Lincoln Series, I have developed a strong working relationship with our 16th Congressional District representative, Congressman Adam Kinzinger. In light of my optimism for Illinois and our country, I’d like to share some good news coming from Congressman Kinzinger, why I’ll be voting for him this November, and why you should, too.

First, he’s built and maintains strong relationships with other federal officials, including President Trump, Vice President Pence, other congressmen and congresswomen. I see him with Vice President Pence regularly and know that he’s been invited to the White House several times in recent months.

He keeps a lookout for us, legislatively. He recently introduced a bill to make the federal government operate more energy efficient which will save taxpayers a great deal of money. He’s also deeply concerned with the well-being of our family, friends and neighbors as he works diligently toward ending the opioid crisis in Illinois and our country. An issue that has been paramount for my community.

Congressman Kinzinger still serves as a pilot in the United States Air Force. His love of community, Illinois and his country confirms his commitment to national security.

Don’t let others try to tell you that Adam Kinzinger doesn’t have your back — he does, and he’s on top of it. He’s visible, accessible, and quite frankly, a really nice guy. I am proud to call him my friend and my congressman. Please join me in voting for Adam Kinzinger for U.S. Rep. on Nov. 6. Our grandchildren deserve an optimistic future!
