CORONAVIRUS
Testing for the coronavirus will continue to play an important role in how we identify hot-spots, and navigate a safe and smart reopening of the country. I've supported legislation that would increase testing, improve technology, and ensure there are enough resources to facilitate the tests.
This pandemic has been taxing on families in our area, and I know some communities in Illinois are being hit harder than others with the coronavirus outbreak. I've sent letters to key Administration officials to address shortcomings, and I've spoken with Governor Pritzker about the need to get equipment and relief where it is needed most.
And I will continue to speak out about the need for a plan to safely and smartly reopen the country. Through letters and calls, I've told the Governor that he needs to recognize the differences in regions of our state and how some places have been ready to open safely for weeks now. We cannot put a one-size-fits-all plan on a state as diverse as Illinois, and we cannot continue to hold towns with no COVID-19 cases back while other areas like Chicago continue to see a spike.
The American people are resilient, resourceful, and fighters. For weeks, we saw Good Samaritans reach across communities and make an impact. We watched as nursing home residents made masks for their community, restaurants deliver food to frontline workers and first responders, police officers go out of there way to help celebrate a young birthday, and so many other acts of kindness. We also watched as our very way of life was threatened by a global pandemic, and how so many followed orders to stay-at-home and flatten the curve to make sure our hospitals weren't overrun. And we did that. We adjusted, adapted, and kept ourselves socially distant for the good of our community and our country. Our frontline heroes went above and beyond during this pandemic, and they continue that fight today.
Now, it's time for Governor Pritzker to set some guidelines for how we can live AND work in this new normal.
Now, it's time for us to enter the next phase of this fight against the coronavirus.
Now, it's time to reopen Illinois and let the American people get back to work.
CHINA TASK FORCE
It's an honor to be named to the China Task Force in the House, and appointed to serve as a Co-Chair on the National Security and Technology Pillars of the Task Force's mission.
For far too long, China has threatened our way of life and encroached on our thriving economy. We have to start pushing back, and hold them accountable for the misinformation the Chinese government perpetrates, the counterfeit products they steal off of products made by hardworking Americans, and the cyber attacks they launch on our telecommunications. The coronavirus outbreak showed us once again that China is not our friend and we cannot trust them. Withholding information on this virus like they did has been devastating to the world, and especially the United States. By lying about the virus from the start and then withholding information and hoarding personal protective equipment, the Communist Party of China has cost thousands of American lives. This is unacceptable and we must hold them accountable because enough is enough.
I know we cannot go back in time and change what has happened, but we can learn from this experience and take steps to get the answers from the Chinese government that we all deserve.
This has been an unprecedented crisis, and one that the American people have faced together. We flattened the curve and made adjustments to help one another as best we could. As we move into reopenings, I will be the first to say that we have to get through this coronavirus by being smart, safe, and vigilant. Let's wear our masks where we need to, let's maintain a safe social distance, and let's remind the world that we are the greatest nation in the world because we will always persevere.
Our enemies cannot destroy us, and we will hold bad actors in China and Russia and all around the world accountable for their deadly, destructive, malign actions against the United States and our allies.
