Ottawa Times: Kinzinger supports defense bill
Kinzinger supports defense bill
The local congressman on Wednesday praised President Donald Trump for a nearly $700 billion defense policy bill.
The legislation calls for adding troops, ships, planes and other equipment, but Congress has yet to pass a spending bill for those things, with Trump calling for Democrats to get on board.
In a statement, U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, said he was happy to see the defense authorization bill signed into law, especially after it received bipartisan support.
"Our military is in need of the robust funding to address our readiness crisis with a balanced approach to allocating such resources," he said.
Kinzinger also said he was glad the bill included a provision giving 3,500 additional special immigrant visas for Afghan translators and interpreters who served with the United States and its allies. This was a provision that Kinzinger had advocated for.
"These brave men and women risked their lives to assist us during the war in Afghanistan, and are now facing threats to their lives from terrorist groups," the congressman said. "We must uphold our core values and leave no man behind.”
